Wearing clothes beneath one's ankles

I have always understood wearing clothes pass one’s ankles to be a sign of pride and showing off one’s affluence. However, this is not the case as of today. Nowadays, wearing clothes beneath the ankles does not benefit or harm anyone in any way, and doing it to show affluence is based on one’s intention. In this light, please inform me of the ruling on wearing clothes beneath one’s ankles in our present times.

الجوابُ حامِدا ًو مُصلیِّا ً

Wearing clothes beneath your ankles is a sigh of pride. Even though Allah knows the condition of the heart, this external sign of pride has also been prohibited in Ahadith. However, if one’s is unaware of his clothes passing his ankle, it may not be Haram, but it is still disliked as per Shari’ah.

مأخَذُ الفَتوی

کما فی صحیح مسلم: عن ابن عمر قال قال رسول اللہﷺ من جر ثوبہ من الخیلاء لم ینظر اللہ الیہ یوم القیامۃ. (۲/ ۱۹۵)
وفی مرقاہ المفاتیح: قال ابن الملک ویفھم منہ ان جرّہ لغیر ذٰلک لا یکون حرامًا لکنہ مکروہ کراہۃ تنزیہ (۸/ ۱۲۸)
وفی تکملۃ فتح الملہم: والحاصل ان العلّۃ الأصلیۃ من وراء تحریم الاسبال ھی الخیلاء۔۔۔ ولکن تحقق الخیلاء امر مخفی ربما لا یطلع علیہ من ابتلی بہ فأقیم سببہ مقام العلۃ وھو الاسبال (الی قولہ) وعلی ہذا کلما تحقق الاسبال تحت الکعبین جاء المنع الا فی غیر حالۃ الاختیار فان انتفاء الخیلاء فی ذلک متیقن لأن الخیلاء لا تتحقق بفعل لا قصد للعبدہ فیہ ومن ہذہ الجہۃ اجاز رسول اللہﷺ الاسبال لأبی بکر، وقال لہ (لیست ممن یصنعہ خیلاء) وبہذا تنطبق الروایات۔ (واللہ اعلم بالصواب)
