The Ruling on the Supplication Recited Between the Two Prostrations

Is it permissible to recite the supplication between the two prostrations that goes: “Allahumma ighfir li, warhamni, wajburni… (till the end)”? Is this authentic in hadith? Because I have read that nothing extra can be recited in salah. Please guide.

الجوابُ حامِدا ًو مُصلیِّا ً

It should be clear that for an individual praying alone and for a follower (muqtadi), whether in a fard or nafl prayer, it is mustahabb (recommended) to say “Allahumma ighfir li” while sitting between the two prostrations. And if there is enough time, he may also recite along with it: “warhamni, wahdini, wa‘afini, warzuqni.” However, for the imam, the instruction of the Noble Prophet ﷺ is that the imam should lead the prayer in a light and moderate manner, so that the elderly and sick people in the congregation do not face difficulty or hardship. As for the supplication mentioned in the question, it is also narrated in authentic hadith.

مأخَذُ الفَتوی

کما فی الترمذی:عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَقُولُ بَيْنَ السَّجْدَتَيْنِ: " اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَارْحَمْنِي وَاجْبُرْنِي وَاهْدِنِي وَارْزُقْنِي" الخ ( باب ما یقول بین السجدتین، ج: 1، ص: 175، ط: البشری )۔
و فی رد المحتار: قال أبو يوسف: سألت الإمام أيقول الرجل إذا رفع رأسه من الركوع والسجود اللهم اغفر لي؟ قال: يقول ربنا لك الحمد وسكت، ولقد أحسن في الجواب إذ لم ينه عن الاستغفار نهر وغيره. أقول: بل فيه إشارة إلى أنه غير مكروه إذ لو كان مكروها لنهى عنه كما ينهى عن القراءة في الركوع والسجود وعدم كونه مسنونا لا ينافي الجواز كالتسمية بين الفاتحة والسورة، بل ينبغي أن يندب الدعاء بالمغفرة بين السجدتين خروجا من خلاف الإمام أحمد لإبطاله الصلاة بتركه عامدا ولم أر من صرح بذلك عندنا، لكن صرحوا باستحباب مراعاه الخلاف، والله أعلم الخ ( باب صفۃ الصلاۃ، ج: 1، ص: 505، ط: سعید )۔
