We live in Dubai. 12 years ago, we opened a N.R.I bank account in Bombay. We didn’t know that it is sinful to open a savings account, in which even now interest is being provided. We used to give this money to the needy without the intention of attaining reward. Now we would like to close off this account but we are not able to go back to India, nor do we know when we will be able to go. So as long as this account is not closed, is it best for us to take out the accumulated interest and give it to someone or should we leave it in the bank? Also, will we not be sinful for taking this money out of the bank?
If the questioner opened the savings account without knowing about its legality (i.e. without knowing that it is not permissible), he should close it now that he has become aware of it. If he is not able to go to India, then as long as the account is not closed, it is permissible to take out the interest money and give it to any needy person without the intention of attaining reward. However, he should try his best to close off this account as soon as possible and must also repent and seek forgiveness what whatever sin has been committed relating to this issue.
And Allah knows best.
