Performing the Sunnat of the Fajr Namaz after the obligatory prayer

Some people perform the Sunnat of the Fajr Namaz after the obligatory prayer. Please tell us the correct method of performing the Sunnat of the Fajr Namaz as prescribed by the Shari’ah. Also, if someone is late for the congregational prayer of the Fajr Namaz, will he perform the Sunnat, or join the congregational prayer?

الجوابُ حامِدا ًو مُصلیِّا ً

The Sunnat of the Fajr Namaz can be performed as long as one is hopeful that he can complete it before the Imam sits for the Tashahhd, otherwise it should be omitted and one should, instead, join the Imam in the congregational prayer. Furthermore, even though there is no Qaza for Sunnat prayers, if the Sunnat of Fajr was omitted, it is better to make up for it any time after the rising of the sun until it has reached its zenith on that day.

مأخَذُ الفَتوی

فی الدر المختار: (وإذا خاف فوت) رکعتی (الفجر لاشتغالہ بسنتھا ترکھا) لکون الجماعۃ أکمل (وإلا) بأن رجا إدراک رکعۃ فی ظاھر المذھب، وقیل التشھد، واعتمدہ الشر نبلا لی الخ وفی الشامیۃ تحت (قولہ: تبعًا للبحر) فیہ أن صاحب البحر ذکر أن کلام الکنز یشمل التشھد، ثم ذکر أن ظاھر الجامع الصغیر أنہ لو رجا إدراک التشھد فقط یترک السنۃ، ونقل عن الخلاصۃ أنہ ظاھر المذھب، وأنہ رجحہ فی البدائع (إلی قولہ) وأما إذا فاتت وحدھا فلا تقضی قبل طلوع الشمس بالإجماع (إلٰی قولہ) وأما بعد طلوع الشمس فکذلک عندھما، وقال محمد: أحب إلی أن یقضیھا إلٰی الزوال کما فی الدرر، وقیل ھذا قریب من الإتفاق؛ لأن قولہ أحب إلیَّ، دلیل علٰی أنہ لو لم یفعل لا لوم علیہ۔ اھـ (ج۲، ص٥٧) واللہ اعلم بالصواب
