Is it enough to perform only eight Raka'aats for Taraweeh? And can the Taraweeh prayer be performed in sets of four Raka'aats?

Is it enough to perform only eight raka’ats of Taraweeh? Also, can Taraweeh be performed in sets of four raka’ats or only sets of two raka’ats?

الجوابُ حامِدا ًو مُصلیِّا ً

It has been established from Ahadith and narrations of the Sahaba and the Tabi’een that the Taraweeh prayer, an extra twenty raka’ats (performed in the month of Ramadan), is an emphasized Sunnah. All of the scholars are unanimous upon this. For this reason, this Sunnah will not be fulfilled by performing only eight raka’ats. Nonetheless, Taraweeh can also be performed in sets of four raka’ats instead of two.

ففی السنن الكبرى للبيهقي: عن ابن عباس قال: " كان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يصلي في شهر رمضان في غير جماعة بعشرين ركعة، والوتر "(2/ 698)
وفی حاشية ابن عابدين: (قوله وهي عشرون ركعة) هو قول الجمهور وعليه عمل الناس شرقا وغربا. (2/ 45) واللہ أعلم۔
