There is no place for celebrating birthdays in Islam

I tried to make my children understand that we should not celebrate birthdays. But they oppose saying that there should be a day in which we invite all of our friends and gifts are given to us and also have cake. Is this correct? What can be done to make children happy if we cannot celebrate birthdays?

الجوابُ حامِدا ًو مُصلیِّا ً

There is no place for celebrating birthdays in Islam. For this reason, one should not adopt the customs of others to make their children happy. However, if one invites their children’s friends to their home on any other day before or after someone’s birthday, then this will be permissible.

مأخَذُ الفَتوی

فی مشکوٰۃ المصابیح: عن ابن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما، قال قال رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ و سلم ’’من تشبہ بقوم فھو منھم‘‘. رواہ أحمد و أبوداؤد (۲/ ۳۷۵)۔
و فی مرقاۃ المفاتیح: تحت: عن ابن عمر رضي الله تعالى عنهما قال قال رسول الله من تشبه بقوم أي من شبه نفسه بالكفار مثلا في اللباس وغيره أو بالفساق أو الفجار أو بأهل التصوف والصلحاء الأبرار فهو منهم أي في الإثم والخير قال الطيبي هذا عام في الخَلْق والخُلُق والشعار ولما كان الشعار أظهر في الشبه ذكر في هذا الباب قلت بل الشعار هو المراد بالتشبه لا غير۔اھ ( ۲/ ۳۷۵) واللہ اعلم بالصواب
