How can u tell if someone is eligible for Zakat? If someone has two houses worth up to 6 lakhs, and lives comfortably, but is currently unemployed or is receiving a low income, will it be permissible to give him Zakat?
Whoever does not possess 52 Tola of silver or its monetary value in cash or merchandise, does not possess more than that which fulfills one’s basic needs, and is not a Seyed (i.e. of the progeny of the Holy Prophetﷺ) is eligible for Zakat. Therefore, regarding the person in question, if one of his houses is more than sufficient for his living necessities, then it will not be permissible to give him Zakat.
And Allah knows best.
ولا یجوز دفع الزکوٰۃ إلی من یملک نصابا من أی مال کان، ویجوز دفعھا إلی من یملک أقل من ذلک۔ اھـ (ص٩٩) واللہ تعالیٰ اعلم
