Assalamu Alaikum
“Respected Sir,
I am called Ansari; my caste/community is known as Ansari, but I do not have a family lineage record (genealogy), and my father also does not know about it, nor does he remember our lineage. So, can I call myself Ansari, introduce myself as Ansari, and use ‘Ansari’ with my name?
Would this be against the hadith in which it is stated that whoever knowingly attributes himself to someone other than his father, Paradise is forbidden for him?
Since I do not know whether my lineage actually connects to the Ansar of Madinah or not, please provide an answer and oblige. It will be a great favor.”
“In the given case, although the questioner does not possess a genealogy record or does not remember his lineage, if his family has been popular among people as Ansari from earlier times, then it is permissible for him to call himself Ansari or to use ‘Ansari’ with his name. This would not fall under the warning mentioned in the hadith.
However, if this is not the case, then the questioner should exercise caution in this matter.”
