Ruling on Collecting Donations During the Adhan and Khutbah

I am a member of the mosque committee. Sometimes in our mosque, donations are collected after the Imam sits on the pulpit for the Friday sermon—either during the Adhan or the Khutbah—so that more people are present. However, some worshippers have objected, saying that this practice is not correct. Kindly explain, according to Shariah, whether collecting or giving donations at that time is permissible or not.

الجوابُ حامِدا ًو مُصلیِّا ً

It is not permissible to collect donations during the Adhan or Khutbah on Friday. However, collecting donations for the mosque’s needs before or after the sermon is allowed in Shariah, and there is no harm in doing so.

مأخَذُ الفَتوی

ففی في صحيح البخاري: (عن ابي هريرة،أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم قال: (إذا قلت لصاحبك يوم الجمعة أنصت والإمام يخطب فقد لغوت)۔ (كتاب الجمعه،باب الإنصات يوم الجمعة والإمام يخطب،34/934،ص:150،ط :دارالسلام)۔
وفي مصنف ابن أبي شيبة: (عن عطاء، عن ابن عباس وابن عمر :أنهما كانا يكرهان الصلاة والكلام يوم الجمعة بعد خروج الامام"(كتاب الجمعه،باب في الكلام إذاصعدالإمام المنبر والإمام يخطب)۔ (رقم الحديث:5340)۔
وفي الدر المختار: (إذا خرج الإمام) من الحجرة إن كان وإلا فقيامه للصعود،شرح المجمع (فلا صلاة ولا كلام إلى تمامها) وإن كان فيها ذكر الظلمة في الأصح (الی قولہ) (وكل ما حرم في الصلاة حرم فيها) أي: في الخطبة خلاصة وغيرها،فيحرم أكل وشرب وكلام ولو تسبيحا،أو رد سلام أو أمر بمعروف بل يجب عليه أن يستمع ويسكت)۔ (كتاب الصلاة ،باب الجمعة، ج: 3،ص: 38،ط: رشيدية)۔
