In the name of Allah,
What do the respected scholars and honorable Muftis say regarding this issue: A group of people have formed a committee, under which they will collect 3,000 rupees monthly from three hundred participants for three years. Each month, through a draw (lottery), one motorcycle will be given. Thus, if a person’s name is drawn in the first month, it is as though he received the motorcycle for 3,000 rupees. If his name is drawn in the second month, then it cost him 8,000 rupees. This arrangement will continue in the same manner each month for three years. Whoever receives the motorcycle will not have to continue paying thereafter. If, however, after three years someone’s name has never been drawn, then he will not have the right to claim back the money he deposited. Similarly, if a participant withdraws during the course of the scheme, he may leave, but he will not receive back his deposited money. Is it permissible in Shariah to obtain a motorcycle through this arrangement or not? Kindly provide a detailed answer.
Due to the invalid conditions mentioned in the question, this transaction is impermissible and unlawful in Shariah, and it is necessary to abstain from it.
