Ruling on Qada and Kaffarah for Breaking a Fast While Traveling

What do the respected Islamic scholars and esteemed Muftis say about the following issue: A person was traveling during the month of Ramadan and began fasting. After reaching home, he broke the fast. In this situation, is kaffarah (expiation) required for breaking the fast, or not? Please provide the Islamic ruling on this matter.

الجوابُ حامِدا ًو مُصلیِّا ً

If a person begins fasting while traveling and then breaks the fast after reaching home, only qada (making up the fast) is required — kaffarah (expiation) is not necessary.

مأخَذُ الفَتوی

ففی أحكام القرآن للجصاص: باب من صام في السفر ثم أفطر: وقد اختلف فيمن صام في السفر ثم أفطر من غير عذر فقال أصحابنا عليه القضاء ولا كفارة اھ (1/ 268)۔
و في الخانیة: المسافر إذا قدم مصره وھو صائم فی رمضان فأفتی أن صومه لا یجزیه فأفطر بعد ذلك متعمدا لا کفارة علیه، وإن لم یفت لذلك فكذلك فی قول أبی حنیفة وأبی یوسف رحمھم اللہ تعالیٰ اھ (ھندیہ: ۱/ ۲۱۵) واللہ اعلم بالصواب
