Using technology to provide evidence against criminal offences

According to the Shari’ah, can criminal offences be proven through modern technology, such as pictures and videos?

الجوابُ حامِدا ًو مُصلیِّا ً

According to the Shari’ah, criminal offences cannot be proven through pictures and video recording. In fact, a crime can only be proved through testimony or confession. However, modern technology may assist in proving criminal activity, where by means these things, the accused may be forced to confess after seeing evidence provided against him, or the one bearing false witness may be forced to revoke his false testimony.
