What should we do about mentally deranged brother?

My younger brother is mentally deranged. He is a burden on my mother when I am not around, and he also swears at my wife. Please advise me as to what is mandatory upon me to do in this situation according to the light of Islam.

This is indeed a test from Allah, hence, the entire household must remain patient and steadfast, and pray to Allah for his health and wellbeing. If the mentally deranged brother can be cured by any permissible means, then it should be pursued. Otherwise, he should be placed in a separate room from the other household members so that they do not be troubled by him. If these arrangements cannot be made at home, then he may also be transferred to a mental/psychiatric home.
