Ruling on food provided on the occasion of Baraat

الاستفتاء

I have heard Sheikh Makki Al-Hijazi saying discussing two issues regarding marriage on YouTube. Firstly, he had mentioned that the food provided on the occasion of Baraat is Haram (unlawful). However, I have read an Islamic verdict which explains that it is permissible. Secondly, he had mentioned Walima (wedding feast) should be held after the marriage has been consummated. However, I have also read an Islamic verdict which states that if the marriage could not have been consummated for any valid reason, there would be no problem in conducting the Walima before consummation. I want to know who’s words should I accept, the Islamic verdict, or the words of Sheikh Makki?

الجواب حامدا و مصلیا

If the family of the bride hosts those who come to their home on the occasion of Baraat, not for any name or show and not without being imposed by any tradition or custom, then there is no harm in this as per Shari’ah, and the food provided on the occasion would undoubtedly be permissible. As for the Walima (wedding feast), its time according to Islamic tradition is the day after the night in which the bride is delivered to her husband. It is not necessary to consummate the marriage before the Walima.
And Allah knows best.
